This discussion paper addresses two issues of critical importance for today’s world and future generations:
• The challenge of sustainability in the world economy, society and environment;
• The transformations in economy, society, politics and culture that are resulting from the spread of information and communications technologies (ICTs) and especially the Internet.
The paper raises questions and provoke debate about the relationships among ICTs, the Internet and sustainable development. It summarizes the meaning and context of sustainability today, the changes that have taken place in information and communications since the first Earth Summit in 1992, and the impact that these have had on the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability.
