The IFJ launched the Ethical Journalism Initiative to confront on-going discrimination in the news and reconnect journalists to their mission by enforcing core ethical standards. Challenging sensationalism and stereotypes, checking facts, abiding by codes of conduct, supporting independent self-regulatory bodies are some of the actions identified to uphold media quality and rebuild the public’s trust in the news. Fair gender portrayal is one of the issues to be given priority if media hope to fully reflect the role women play in society. The widespread use of social media, blogs and the development of online news should not be overlooked. Numerous cases reveal a failure to portray gender issues fairly and accurately and very few initiatives exist to develop ethical standards and avoid unfair and outdated stereotypes.

The kit aims to provide an answer to the gender gap in news content and lack of self-regulatory mechanisms - where these do not exist - to confront gender bias. It is organised in two books that may be read independently of each other. Book 1 discusses conceptual issues pertaining to gender, media and professional ethics. Book 2 presents gender-ethical reporting guidelines on several thematic areas.

Specifically, it is designed for use by anyone interested in communication for the holistic development of children.

Parts One and Two explain how the approach recognizes the diverse conditions in which children around the world live and the media environments to which they have access. Part Three maps the different developmental characteristics and needs of children at different ages, distinguishing generally between: early years (birth through 6 years), middle years (7 to 10 years), and early adolescent years (11 to 14 years).

The document draws upon available global literature on the role of media in all aspects of children’s lives, with potential for positive as well as negative outcomes. It suggests that media are not inherently good or bad, but are technologies at our disposal. Using this academic rationale, Part Four presents four central principles for producing communication for children, each supported by guidelines. Part Five suggests ways to avoid common pitfalls in developing communication for children and Part Six offers additional positive examples and supplementary resources (audio-visual materials, books, academic sources, etc.) PDF.

What is your vision for the role media should play in your community? What could you do in your neighborhood if you had access to the media? If you could speak and be heard by media corporations, what would you tell them? What would you watch, produce and distribute? What kinds of rules would you put in place to make sure that media served the people, all the people? These are big questions, and the task of transforming the media is a difficult and long-term struggle. But there are many things you can do to make a meaningful impact in your community and country. In this manual, you will find information about some of the many media justice organizing, policy and education drives going on around the United States. The guide is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 provides information on how the media operates today, who owns it, the rules that govern it and the organizations working to change it. Chapter 2 deals with the more concrete aspects of community organizing: how to recruit people, how to organize your group, run meetings, etc. In Chapter 3, there is a guide to researching your media, and in Chapter 4, there are several resources guides on actions you can take.

This is a particularly acute concern in new or restored democracies, whose media systems have been warped or shattered by oppression, corruption or the effects of war and underdevelopment. This paper has been prepared in order to define indicators of media development in line with the priority areas of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC): promotion of freedom of expression and media; pluralism; development of community media; human resource development (capacity building of media professionals and institutional capacity building). The paper is firmly located in the framework established by the five UNESCO declarations on Promoting Independent and Pluralistic Media, endorsed by the Organization’s General Conferences, which provide the overarching set of principles from which these utcomes and indicators are derived.

In 190 or so pages of text, the Copy/South Research Group, which have researched and debated these issues over the past 12 month, has tried to critically analyse and assess a wide range of copyright-related issues that impact on the daily lives (and future lives) of those who live in the global South.

Ultimately, this dossier seeks to provide an avenue into the serious discussions that must be held regarding copyright and development at the global level. The Group consistently look at copyright as a western idea being imposed on the global South. However, it is also time to look at the innovation coming from the global South as a model for transforming all cultures. Furthermore, it is time to develop deeper and stronger connections between activists in the global North interested in critiquing copyright laws and those in the global South seeking the same goals.
